What Good Writers Understand

I have one question for you today before I give you the link further down to that answer:

What does every writer crave?

Leave your comments below BEFORE you click on the link to find my answer, and then leave your comments in that other post and tell me if you agree or not.

But let me give you a few hints. Look at the titles below, answer my question above, try to figure out what these titles have to do with my question, then find out what good writers understand, leaving your comments there, as well.

Meet my gals

I'd like to introduce you to my gals, my best buds, my listening partners while I write and yell: The little one at the top is Daisy, my Shi Tsu & Lhapso mix. That was a photo when she was a few months old but now she's a big girl - almost 5 years old and still looks like that: all cute and innocent-like...yeah, RIGHT!!!!
The one to the right is my 9 month-old bull terrier - Phiona. And yes, she's wearing a diaper and cute panty because Phiona is a gal, need I explain? She's sitting in her favorite chair in my office looking at me with those eyes that say, "Get off the computer all ready, woman, and play with me!!"

Believe it or not but my Daisy(all 14 pounds) is the Alpha dog. She'll growl a warning to Phiona (42 pounds) to stay away from her food and water. When Phiona's had enough, she ducks her head, picks Daisy up and takes her for a piggyback ride. Daisy has the funniest look on her face when that happens, almost like a plea saying, "Why the hell did you get this one when you had perfection all ready?" heheheheheh

Anyhoot, wanted to introduce everyone to my partners-in-crime.

Now meet the cousins.

Biggies and E-books

So, the biggies have woken up. Whether it's because they grabbed a few carrots and other vegetables and smartened up, or greed for more ways to make money, who's to say, and who cares. Authors now have more people talking about e-books. E-books are now a huge possibility with them:

Harper Collins

But wait, there's more:

Can e-books save publishing?

Oh, and have e-books become more popular than print books?

So, dear reader, do you guys have an e-reader? Are you considering buying one?

What's your impression on e-books?

Come on, don't be shy, leave your comments.

What a WASTE!!

So here I was reading this post on Pimp My Novel Blog
and suddenly I had this urge to punch the wall. I didn't...it was just an urge, but the mental image was enough satisfaction for me so my hand remained untouched. The host of this blog gave an awesome description and breakdown of why I got upset.

Anyhoot...

What riled me up was the part about books returned by bookstores and how many of them are discarded...destroyed...burned to a crisp...adios amigos!! WHY?

Are there no libraries these books can be donated to?

Are there no needy old folks homes, hospitals, schools, shelters, low-income homes, churches, associations, etc. that might benefit with baskets made up of books?

Where is the logic of destroying books or their covers?

I know authors are given a chance to purchase at a discount their books back if money allows. But the thought of books destroyed because they are returned just...just...&%^&**^%^&%^&!!!!

I don't know. Maybe someone out there has the answer and can enlighten me as to the reason why books shouldn't be allowed to remain as is after they have been returned. I just find it a waste to spend money to produce a book then tear off its cover or scrap it all together.

What a shame!

Meet Martha Swirzinski

1. Tell me about the title of the series and what that means to readers?
The title Movement and More suggests that within the pages of our books I offer not just fantastic rhymes and great pictures but moving, interacting, thinking and socializing. Our books engage the whole child, all of the domains of child development.

2. You mention “our” books. Who is the other author?
I co-wrote these with Dr. Anita Tieman, a psychologist, who has spent many years working with children. She brings her expertise into the social and emotional aspect of these books.

3. You have three books. Leap…Laugh…Plop, Guess…Giggle…Wiggle and Kick… Catch…Buzzz. Can you tell me a bit about them?
These three books offer the ultimate mind/body connection. When children move both their bodies and minds are strengthened. Using entertaining rhymes and charming pictures, these fun and creative books offer multiple ways for your child to move. They also provide mind stimulating activities on each page. Each book brings the joy of movement together with the joy of reading. The pages of these books are filled with laughter, learning, movement and more.
More specifically: Leap…Laugh…Plop works on all of the locomotor skills
Guess…Giggle…Wiggle… has the children doing creative movement
Kick…Catch…Buzzzz.. addresses the manipulative skills

4. Will there be any more in the series?
Yes, as a matter of fact we are working on the fourth now, which will be specifically on the non locomotor skills.

5. How did you come up with this idea for a series of books?
I teach in a preschool and have my Master’s degree in Kinesiology, so I’ve been involved with children and movement for over 15 years now. I wanted to come up with a way that parents, and teachers could incorporate the specific movement skills necessary for motor and brain development in an easy and fun way. Doing an activity isn’t always easy. Sometimes space, equipment or time may not be available. However, reading a book is fun, easy and doesn’t require much planning.

6. Where can readers find your books?

Thank you, Martha, for being my guest today. Here is information on the books mentioned above:

1.)  Leap...Laugh...Plop

This book introduces children to locomotor movement skills. It keeps children laughing and learning on each wonderful page.

2.)  Guess... Giggle...Wiggle
Guess… Giggle… Wiggle… challenges children to identify the animals based on clues.  The book keeps children moving alongside the locomotor skills. As with the first in the series Leap… Laugh… Plop, each page of this second book is filled with wonderful suggestions that incorporate the social, emotional and mental aspects of childhood development.
3.)  Kick...Catch...Buzzz
The third book In the series, Kick… Catch… Buzzz introduces children to the manipulative movement skills. Each page offers kids the opportunity to participate in fun movement and lively discussion.

It's January 1, 2010

So we survived another year. Not sure how many survived last night's partying, however. GRIN!

Our resolutions begin today and I have to say I woke up with a smile and full of energy. Although my sciatica acted up during the night, I am determined not to allow it to rule my life. Bite the bullet and move onward, after all, what's the point of sitting and arguing with my back. It won't answer...like a stubborn teen who's been caught in the act but won't admit it's their fault.

As a writer my goals are to complete at least two of my novels this year and submit them. There are a plethora of WIPs in my agenda but figure committing to 2 for now is less stressful.

Bubba and Giganto: Odds Against Us book 2 is one of those books.

Doorman's Creek, my YA paranormal suspense thriller was actually written as a screenplay when I first began my career and then I added descriptive details, background and settings, and the five senses to make it into a book. Most of my manuscripts begin like screenplays. Love to hear my characters talking first. Oddball, I know.

Anyhoot, wanted to fulfill part of my resolution to come in and blog everyday or at least every other day to get my creative juices flowing. The best part of a blog are the comments, that interaction where we can pass tips, info, and share our stories. So don't be shy this year, leave comments, whether you agree with my sentiments or not, that's fine. I'm Greek and can handle a good debate, trust me!

Here's wishing everyone a great start to 2010!
